buttony sweater

a semi-successful FO:

yarn: debbie bliss merino chunky, about 9 balls
needles: 5.5mm circ
extras: 12 wooden buttons
pattern notes: top down raglan with buttonholes in a garter stitch border, available here.

the good: it fits nicely now that i've resized it. i love the buttons and they way they can be worn a multitude of ways. the yarn is yummy.

the bad: i had to do some serious reseaming to make it fit, and it's still a bit big. my improvised mattress stitch seam worked nicely but i don't know what to do with the excess on the inside.

lop it off with my overlocker and pray it doesn't unravel, or just tack it down to the inside of the sweater?

i'm also planning to buy another couple of balls of the same yarn and give it a big shawl collar. the neckline is a bit floppy so that should firm it up a bit as well as making a pretty edge when it folds over.

That's a great styled sweater and it looks really cute on you. :)

supposedly overlocking and then cutting it should work -- I have a sweater I need to do that to myself, but I am scared to do it! ;)

Well, it would be almost like steeking, except that the wool content isn't likely enough to hold it on its own. I would go Route 1 - overlock it.

cute sweater!

I'm not at all versed in the ways of sewing, but I found an article on downsizing at chic knits that may be able help.

Very cute sweater! I like the shawl collar idea too, they are so snuggly when it gets cold.

It's lovely. I'm no use at advice though, hope you sort it out ok.

I second the chic knits resizing, i've used that on a tank and it worked great.

What a lovely neckline. It's a great twist on boatnecks. A collar could be very nice, but I like it as it is as well. Thanks for the pattern, and good luck with resizing. I can't think of any reason overlocking wouldn't work.

It looks great - I love the length too, so many sweaters are far too short and this one looks like it'll actually cover that annoying gap between vest and jeans.

You saved me a boring job as well. Not only did I recently fall in love with merino chunky and vow to knit the delias-esque sweater in it once I got round to working out a pattern, but your sizing on the pattern is exactly right for me. Result! Cheers Katie! xx

I love this — I have wanted to knit a version of Cathode similar to this, with a fold-over turtleneck and an off-center zipper.

What gauge did you have? It's not on the pattern.

My suggestion would be to head to your local 2nd hand store, purchase the most inexpensive sweater you can find (or scan the closet from some formerly loved friends) and give it a whirl!!!

Beautiful job indeed though!!!
